And then you have a band like Smash Mouth, who started doing that right away and can't be called sellouts, because that term would imply they had integrity to begin with.
Ultimately, I feel this argument between "artistic integrity" vs. "selling-out" always plays out to discussion that regards the binary western economic structures of Socialism and Capitalism. Both of which manifest their own inherent complications within human experience. Neither is better or worse than the other. Both will put lashes to your back when given the opportunity. This is not to say that both should be excluded. It just means that it is best left up to each artist to decide which lash they are more inclined to tolerate. Beyond that it's just a lyric/phrase that I like from a song by RFTP. (http://home.wxs.nl/~frankbri/royalhis.html)
A ton of artists, bands, writers, whoever are shamelessly in it for the money, and there's nothing wrong with that. They get paid to make art, its great work if you can get it.
However, seeing someone really talented shilling their face to sell cheetos or something like that makes my stomach turn. its not so much selling out, as it is selling off your self-respect to some corporation. unfortunately, for most artists the kind of money that is offered to do that kind of thing is usually really hard to pass up compared to what they may be making from art.
As my high school friends used to say "We love you when nobody likes you, but now that you're getting recognized for doing what you love, you're not worth out time."
Of course, big difference between making it big and selling out. At least, to me. So many people seem to think that air time = selling out.
I like eating. If you're going to pay me to do art, I do it on your terms. I can still do it on my terms, but that doesn't mean that I'll get paid for it.
