They were backwards though. They were a boy band that somehow morphed into something great, not the other way around.

Like anarchy. Like punk. Like reggae. Socialism is a racket. (http://pitchforkmedia.com/columns/get-that-out-of-your-mouth/05-01-28.shtml)

Well, I meant because they stopped playing straight-up rock covers and put on suits and shit. Really Moby is the first person to come to mind.

The Beatles earned enough money that they could be experimental.

here, less confusing answer: Moby!

Because he used to make really loud noisy music that no one liked and now he makes happy sappy crap that he licenses to commercials.

A ton of artists, bands, writers, whoever are shamelessly in it for the money, and there's nothing wrong with that. They get paid to make art, its great work if you can get it.

However, seeing someone really talented shilling their face to sell cheetos or something like that makes my stomach turn. its not so much selling out, as it is selling off your self-respect to some corporation. unfortunately, for most artists the kind of money that is offered to do that kind of thing is usually really hard to pass up compared to what they may be making from art.

As my high school friends used to say "We love you when nobody likes you, but now that you're getting recognized for doing what you love, you're not worth out time."

Of course, big difference between making it big and selling out. At least, to me. So many people seem to think that air time = selling out.

Ultimately, I feel this argument between "artistic integrity" vs. "selling-out" always plays out to discussion that regards the binary western economic structures of Socialism and Capitalism. Both of which manifest their own inherent complications within human experience. Neither is better or worse than the other. Both will put lashes to your back when given the opportunity. This is not to say that both should be excluded. It just means that it is best left up to each artist to decide which lash they are more inclined to tolerate. Beyond that it's just a lyric/phrase that I like from a song by RFTP. (http://home.wxs.nl/~frankbri/royalhis.html)

Wait, are you suggesting modern boy bands start out as something great?

Not that I was ever a fan of hers anyway, but her teen-pop metamorphosis was particularly galling.

And then you have a band like Smash Mouth, who started doing that right away and can't be called sellouts, because that term would imply they had integrity to begin with.

I like eating. If you're going to pay me to do art, I do it on your terms. I can still do it on my terms, but that doesn't mean that I'll get paid for it.

I sold out long before you ever even heard my name
I sold my soul to sell a record, dipshit
And you bought it

Why is it only described as selling out when you are actually successful at marketing your art?
