Or maybe people would still be as hostile as they are if they knew I was in fact currently dating a manic-depressive person. It's not bad, but sure neither is gaming REALLY. i am related to and friends with plenty of them, and think they're fine friends but i personally know i wouldn't do well with one as a partner. i think the difference is whether or not they consider their conditions as a daily challenge and whether or not they get treated. i've seen a fair amount of them stay conscious of their mood swings and forego medication [my father is like this, not drinking has helped tremendously] but it's hard to say what that's like for the people around the bi-polar. what concerns me are the ones who righteously keep any coping mechanisms at bay and create all types of destruction in the lives of the people around them. i mean, we only put as much trouble within arms reach as we choose to deal with, but you know. it can wreak havoc.

I had to say gamer, because I'm manic depressive (albeit a mild case) and if there's anything more tragic than one manic depressive, it's two of them trying to have a functioning relationship.

Hell, I'd date both. The manic-depressives are sure fun when they're in their manic stages. So that would probably be an off-and-on thing. Or short term.

Gaming doesn't last forever. People move on to other interests (after a decade or two!). And gamers are also very low maintenance. If you don't have time for them for a day, or a week, they certainly can always find "something" to do to keep themselves amused, eh? I'd probably aim for an LTR with the gamer.

Here I have to presume that while both would probably spend some portion of their time in a state that I wouldn't like to be a part of (that is, being a total geek loser or being in a manic/depressive episode), the gamer episodes would be more predictable and avoidable. I'd rather have a SO who spent one or two nights a week doing dorky shit with his dorky friends than one who had less frequent but more upsetting issues that I'd be forced to deal with. I mean, if we're saying that both have plenty of good qualities, I'm going under the assumption that when he's not in his mom's basement attacking the darkness, the gamer is an okay guy to hang with.

That being said, you fall for who you fall for, and it's never a case of all other things being equal. Being bipolar even while medicated can be very hard, but I don't think it has to be a deal-breaker; it wouldn't necessarily be one for me.

manic depression has the potential to be entertaining at least, even if it's a sort of intense or tragic. as opposed to a gamer, who's problem is talking too much about all the cool items his character scored in this dungeon last night or some shit, which is hella boring. I'd, personally, rather be with someone who's unstable over someone who's boring any day.

When I think of gamers, I think of people who don't just occasionally RPG, but live it. They go to cons, they can write detailed emails or posts about what they're doing in their latest campaigns, etc. While they aren't bad as friends, I wouldn't date one again. I mean, a hs teacher who looks to summer vacation as "Woo-hoo, time to be the DM and plan campaigns!"... leery. He spent the first week of his time off like that. The game was the center of the interaction. In contrast, another ex... gaming = excuse for drinking beer while bullshitting about esoterica (humanities geeks).
