I have this thing where I can barely appreciate cheeze in pop culture. In music, I need about two or three decades of distance between me and the crap in question. In television it just doesn't happen, at all. With movies I need mind-altering chemicals, in general. (I actually was able to enjoy Moulin Rouge in the theater because of this.) Maybe this makes me a snob, but I just need actual redeeming qualities in my media consumption.
The upshot of this is that I don't have any guilty pleasures. Just pleasures other people think I should feel guilty about. And also I'm glad that no one is into Survivor anymore.

I have never seen pop culture in worst shape in my life.
Fortunately, the independent films and music still exist!

Why I am not into Pop Culture
Date: 2004-01-09 07:55 pm (UTC)This is a great point. I will pass it along.
The reason that I am not into popular culture is
a) I don't have to be. It is so accessible. It is so prolific that I can ask almost anyone and they will be able to give me an detailed description of the previous nights tv line-up. Films are so bad nowadays that I often find their trailers more interesting. In fact I think hollywood should eject movies altogether and commit to just making trailers all of the time. From what I have heard that Charlie's Angel's 2 Unrated DVD is pretty much just a 2hr trailer. Music is the same way. Why not just eliminate the concept of the celebrity endorsement and expensive commercials by just having pop stars write 2 and half to 3 minute jingles. Quit with the artistic pretense already!
b) As a result of popular culture's accessibility it is completely intellectually unrewarding. Even when I do endulge in a few episodes of Buffy or watch the Matrix or listen to KEXP I get so little in return for my time that I think twice about ever wanting to do it again. And if The Swans ever taught me anything it was this. (http://swans.pair.com/IMG_PRODUCTS/timeis.jpg)
c) My interests are in direct opposition of the popular culture system. Everything within that system is designed specifically to be digested almost on impact (sometimes before!). However, my favorite ideas are the ones that it takes me the longest to understand. I am not saying I am vehemently against pop culture. However, I am saying that it does not have much to offer me.
