lauralh How can any rational human being believe in "soul mates" ? I mean there are over 6 Billion people alive right now, over 10 billion have ever lived, what are the odds that the one who was right for you a) lived at the same time as you b) was able to meet you c) and talk to you? Isn't it funny how many people met their "soul mate" at college? I MEAN WHAT ARE THE ODDS.
Steve and I have decided that the problem (for me) with all the people (boys) we know is that none of them are really funny. Joel was funny, even Nick was funny but I really don't know anyone else who's actually funny in this town. I mean most people don't even try, which is kind of terrible. Although I still have problems with dudes who are all "women don't like funny guys" when they aren't actually funny guys.
I wrote the first draft of my rant on LDRs last night, but I'm lazy and will probably not edit it. If anyone cares, comment and I'll send you a link to the first draft. Otherwise I will just post it as is I guess.

Date: 2003-10-02 02:44 pm (UTC)The concept of love defies rationality. Beyond safety and reproduction, relationships are irrational.
You say you want a funny guy, how is that rational? You want humor in your life. Mise well come from your boy toy.
Ditto for the soul mate crowd, except replace humor with new age flakiness.

Date: 2003-10-02 03:11 pm (UTC)But yeah, anyway, the whole 'human beings aren't rational actors' thing is dead on. There's nothing utilitarianism or logic can do to explain why we enjoy shit. If we, and our genetic heritage, do/does follow the A->B->C line of thought, than certainly we wouldn't need any incentive like 'fun' to help us learn the skills we'd need to survive.
On "soul mates"
Date: 2003-10-02 02:52 pm (UTC)Throwing that crap out the window, if you look at it more like synchronicity, it starts making sense that cause and effect chains could create a situation where two people that are highly compatable just happen to be "in the right place at the right time" for each other.
That being said, I'd be happy with girl that's not too ugly, not too dumb, and likes to touch my naughty parts.

I know, you were being sarcastic, but I'm not.
I'm sure there's someone else in the world I could be happy with other than Patrick. But I've never met anyone else who comes close. I do feel pretty unbelievably lucky.
well sure

Date: 2003-10-02 09:06 pm (UTC)Exactly.
However, it's this thinking that gets people into long-distance relationships. And by "people" I mean "me."

1. committed relationships
2. open relationships
3. playing the field
4. committed long-distance relationships
5. open long-distance relationships
What's left? Bestiality?
I don't know...
