  • The Philosopher of Islamic Terror is a terribly interesting article that [livejournal.com profile] candid linked to a couple days ago. It took me this long to read it, though. Well, not really. I've just been recovering from the weekend. I will post later on my thoughts of the divide between spirituality and materialism (even though that's not exactly what the article is about).

  • Completely forgot to mention that Friday night we went to this house party which was interesting for the fact that half the people were on AMT. I'm not really afraid of drugs normally but these kids were a little freaky. The funniest part was when our host, who was completely tripping, gave us the house tour, and was eager to show us his mystification at the fact that there was a faucet in the middle of a room for no apparent reason, no drainage for it I mean. He was completely oblivious, however, to the fact that there were three kids face down on blankets, and one face up and twitching on the sofa. He did point out that one, though, and asked him if he was having a good time. The boy just grinned and nodded a couple of times, and our host turned out the light and led us out again.

  • My birthday is tomorrow. Today I suppose I will look for work, buy Kid Koala tickets, read some PKD, and go to the gym. Also you know, eat and shower. I have no specific plans for tomorrow night but I'm sure someone will help me get drunk. Right now I feel logey because of my birthday pillows, which are just f'in amazing, but not at all conducive to getting out of bed. I suppose it's a good thing I don't currently have a boyfriend, for many reasons, but boys are very not-good at leaving comfy beds.

  • BTW because I'm a weirdo I refer to "kids" and "boys" above as basically people my age or younger. Basically I don't feel comfortable referring to 21-year-olds as "men", even though the minute I got to University everyone did that. And by "everyone" I mean the administration. I can barely think of people 30-yo as being "men".

    I resemble that remark.

Which Dick novel are you currently reading? I've read them all at least twice, some many times more. I guess I'm a little fanatical about his stuff.

It doesn't bother me to be called a boy...at 22 years, I don't think my brain has completely absorbed the fact that I'm not 15 anymore yet (yes, fire away with the "that explains a lot" jokes :p). The fact that I'm supposed to shave has yet to catch up with me; thus, the beard. I keep hoping that one day I'm going to wake up and say "Hey, I'm a man now!"

    On boys

That shit drives me nuts, evoking the rampant Peter Pan complexes that seem to characterize the vast majority of homosexuals. I cannot stand being referred to as 'a boy.' I guess I should just be thankful that you are not substituting an 'i' for the 'y.'

Strangely, I cannot do either (i.e. refer to adult males as 'boys' or 'men') comfortably. When I think of 'boys,' I think of skinny, awkward kids just past puberty with glabrous testicles and poor bathing habits. When I think of 'men,' I inevitably think of males who evoke no sexual interest from me (such as most of my coworkers). I end up having to just refer to the rest as 'guys.' I am dating a guy from Ohio. Were I dating 'a boy,' I would be robbing the cradle. Were I dating 'a man,' he would be. Sort of.

Of course, all of this becomes more problematic with women, whom I mostly chauvinistically refer to as 'girls' because the feminine form of 'guy' makes me sound like a yokel.

    Good point.

go pick up Jihad Vs. McWorld if you're into the materialism-vs-spiritualism debate (I thought it was okay, but nothign grand.)

If you're jonesing for Dick after this last and you've already read all the books, you might want to pick up some Jeff Noon (Vurt comes to mind) not as good but in a similar vein and pretty good still.

I still have about 40 books in the canon, I think. I tried reading Vurt last year but I was in the process of breaking up with nick so couldn't finish it.

Anyway it's not materialism vs. spiritualism per se... read the article.

AMT can be harsh, and if you aren't both careful and patient you tend to overdose. Some friends of mine were experimenting recently and said that it was OK but they prefer LSD. It sounds like a relatively poor party drug from all I have heard.

AMT will be on Schedule I tomorrow, oddly enough.
