We watched Postcards from the Edge last night. I'm not exactly sure why I wanted to see it except that the last interview I read with Carrie Fisher was hilarious. And so was the movie. I mean, you know, bitter but still tasty. Reg had misgivings from the blurb on the DVD but he watched most of it. Afterwards I read up on her drug abuse and mother problems. Debbie Reynolds, omfg. And if anyone has a copy of the Star Wars holiday special, it's one of her few appearances coked out on film (the other being Blues Brothers from which she was almost fired). She was only 21 when she did Star Wars initially, so it's hardly surprising she got got up in a crazy lifestyle that even snared Bob Evans. And she cleaned up before Empire.

Sithwards Induction, or: The Dark Side for Grad Students

"Whatever the aesthetic flaws of the Stars Wars prequels, they do provide what is arguably the most impressive example of backwards induction in fiction. When Palpatine first appears in Episode I, he is a mere Senator from Naboo. When Episode III ends, he is the totalitarian ruler of the galaxy. So how did he do it?"
