I always wondered how that got started or what it's supposed to mean. Is it like, "no one else will give me a star for doing good today, so I better make sure I always have one right here!" ?
(sorry to herbaliser for you getting this a million times, but i doubt anyone is going to come back to this post days later and see my response if i don't respond specifically to their responses ;)
My sister said the only shape she would never get tired of seeing on her body would be something geometrical, but she doesn't have a star tattoo (yet).
I was wondering this last night at the blonde-bimbo party I hung out at for a while. Like three women had a star tatoo on their back, each apparently done separately but with a frightening lack of originality. It's like a fucking cult.
A star says to me: I want a tatoo because it's [hip, popular, whatever] but I don't know what I want and I don't want to go on a limb so I'll get a star because it's safe. It's like saying you like ethnic food because you eat Phad Thai or saying you are indie because you listen to Radiohead ;-)

i got it because i thought it was a metaphor for something that inspired people to think about something bigger than their tiny little self and their unimportant little life.
stereotypically people looked at the stars because they were formulating theories about the world, whether it was literal (what's out in the distant reaches of the universe?) or metaphorical (what's beyond my current way of thinking?)
there are not many symbols which transcend cultures, languages, etc
i spent a lot of time jumping out the window when i was young (i always lived in the basement) and walking alone in the middle of the night looking up and thinking/dreaming
