My understanding is that the iPod battery is not self-replaceable. (http://www.ipodsdirtysecret.com/message.html) That may've changed from then until now, but I doubt it. I think I read that they use a special kind of glue to bond the two halves of the iPod chassis and that you really couldn't open it yourself without completely ruining it.
Now of course its one thing to be CAPABLE of changing the battery yourself, and a completely different thing to do it in a manner that won't screw up the looks of it. If the ipod already looks like its gone through a war zone then no biggie.
Although one has to be aware of GOTCHA'S that people encounter when trying that. For example the ipod mini battery replacement instructions show no mention of warnings about shorting the board when putting the unit back together. Yet, its really difficult not to accidently short some components out on the top of the unit when doing it. Sure that's not an issue if the battery is drained, but Lithium ION batteries are not shipped drained. Usually they ship with about 80% because thats how there supposed to be stored.
That being said I'm not aware of any gotcha's with the 3rd generation ipod, or 4th generation.
I think htat maybe ipod batteries are easier to find than planter's cheese balls so you should just eat those... for that matter cheese balls probably last longer then ipod batteries, problem solved!
