I hate "alt-country" and I hate Bob Dylan, well, not really, but this cover of Nobody 'Cept You is one of the most moving songs I've ever heard.

Reg and I finally got our music sharing to fucking work on our home computers, yay. We have a lot of it in common already actually, but even so I'm sure it's over 80GB. Wonderfully ridiculous.

Unbalanced Equation

I hate Bob Dylan

I find that sometimes my pity for you tends to list toward outrage. However, I understand how Dylan can turn people off. He can be a long-winded at times.

i know what you mean, but the songs from "blood on the tracks" are so very moving by themselves as dylan did them. I can't imagine a better version of "Simple Twist of Fate" or "You're Going to Make Me Lonesome When You Go"

He has the tonal sense of a piece of basalt.

uhhh...yeah, just like the 1,000's of other blues, folk and country singers that he is using as a reference for his music. I actually find cover versions of his songs to be really disconcerting as they tend to smooth out all of the edges. My only issue with his singing is that it can tend to be nasaly. However, that is what makes him distinct.

All those artists he referenced may have had rasp, gravel and grit, but they knew E flat from D. Bob can't tell A sharp from C.

The blues, folk, and country singers he uses "as a reference" were at least trying to sing. There is something detestable about singers trying to sound tortured (or country or raspy or white guys trying to sound like old black guys or any number of other annoying things that singers do). The man can't sing, and doesn't try to. His songs are ok sometimes when done by others.

Which reminds me, I heard John Hammond yesterday, and it was the most disgraceful thing I'd heard since Matchbox 20.

Yeah, I'm calling Dylan a phony.

vocally yes, but that's more because he doesn't have a great voice (although his latter stuff is greatly improved by his old-man voice -- listen to "love sick" or "po' boy".) instrumentally/when composing, he certainly has gone to great lengths to get the right sound on stuff and he's well-versed in how intonation changes a song (compare the blood on the tracks demos, recorded in standard tuning, to the re-recorded versions in open G tuning; same songs, same rhythms and chord changes, but the intonations of the chords changed and so made the songs ...different, if not better.)
