People start getting together around November so they have someone, anyone, to be with for the holidays/winter cold. And then around v-day, they're like "OK, so, I have to do something for some bitch I don't even really care about? No thanks."

Anyone else have any ideas to why Valentine's Day seems to inspire a disproportionate # of breakups?

While couples can coast for months and months on seeing each other but not being explicitly affectionate, Valentine's Day is very much a "put up or shut up" moment. You can't just do something fun for V-Day; you have to find a card or a gift or a moment that tells the other person how much you still WUVS them.

And, if you don't, you can either (A) try and lie very convincingly, or (B) be honest and give up.

true if the people within the relationship have that expectation of valentine's day.

i do not have any expectations of it, i have never had a decent valentine's day and have opted out of celebrating it in the past. this year i decided to participate, but had no expectation of my s.o. participating and it was just fine. good food, relaxing evening.

Man, I can't believe I didn't think about breaking up with my girlfriend on Valentine's Day! That would have been the perfect opportunity.

All my breakups have happened on insignificant dates.

maybe it has to do with the expectations valentine's day sets up being out of place within the expectations of the relationship, threfore adding a stress to the relationship that isn't normally there?

that, and my "ex" looked at it as commercialism at its worst and didn't consider that some people have significance to the day without the roses and candy.

I've actually heard people say pretty much verbatim, "Winter is the time to find someone and settle in for all those cold nights"
