Young men won't commit to marriage because they are so comfortable with their current arrangement — just living with a woman — that they don't see why they should bother, a new study from Rutgers University says. A divorce could cost megabucks. And as great as it would be to have kids, the men are a bit put off by the expectation that they will share child-care burdens equally with their wives. The findings are from Rutgers' National Marriage Project, which released a report Tuesday on the top 10 reasons young men won't marry. The observations won't startle anyone who follows the travails of the unmarried young. But still, the report will probably inflame the current debate on commitment that is taking place from academic campuses to singles' bars.

Really? I thought that was common knowledge. I mean, did women ever really marry for love rather than financial security, until the past few decades?

i was raised by hippies. all they had was love until my mom couldn't stand my dad's unmedicated bi-polarity anymore. financial security was an afterthought, and that has categorized my approach to love and marriage for the most part.

now that you mention it, the ability for women to stay in love vs. the reasons they marry have been two different things, and when i see a general statement about women having trouble staying in love as a reason for why they're not marrying, i find it preposterous. for the reason that i haven't felt that way about how i've approached my own relationships, and the larger issue of exactly what you brought up--that the reasons for marrying have changed for both partners.

i largely agree with what the results of the study show, i just find some of the quotes funny.

whereas I was raised by ex-hippie Mormons who fought my whole childhood, so my view of marriage is pretty wacky!
