Thanksgiving as I practice it combines two of my favorite activities: cooking, and eating stupidly obscene amounts of delicious foods.

There is one problem, however. I don't like pumpkin pie. Now let me 'splain. Where I grew up, the squash family was not exactly a common option in one's culinary options. Weird sausages, yes. Watermelon, yes. Flour and fat-based soups, yes. But I never saw a pumpkin in person till I left home. Why? I don't know, maybe it has something to do with the fact that the leaves change in January back home. Anyway, I never tried pumpkin pie till I was like 22 or something, and well I thought it was weird and unpalatable. Everyone else trying it said it was good, so either they were white-lying, or it's an acquired taste.

I haven't had TG at home since, well, 1994, frankly. I tended to alternate traditional dinners with non-traditional dinners, but last year I went to a potluck and this year I'm trying to host one. I actually think eating the roast flesh of a large bird should be done as often as possible - in the Thanksgiving sense of pig-dinner-party. But till then I'm just going to indulge with this one.

(Don't even try to mention Christmas to me. NOT EVERYONE WORSHIPS SANTA.)

I love Thanksgiving. I love food. A lot. And I'm with you on the whole pumpkin pie thing, but not because I hadn't tried it. My grandmother had an acre of garden at her house when I was a kid, so we had pumpkins right off the vine for pie and jack o'lanterns and stuff. I still can't stand pumpkin pie, it's just... icky.

I used to make a killer Jack Daniels turkey, omg sooo good, went over really well with the soldiers I was stationed with in Germany, but not so well with the post Sergeant Major... he got over it though, he was just mad that my turkey was gobbled up before his. Now is the time for stuffing and green bean casserole and whole black olives stuffed onto your fingertips... yeah, I love this time of year. And hate what comes directly after.

"Don't mention Christmas" ... "hate what comes after" -- you're all silly. Christmas isn't about Santa, or any of that other crap that the advertisers try to brainwash you into. It's mostly about a roasted bird and a big dinner party. To love one and hate the other is just silly.

no, see, I agree totally, but EVERYONE ELSE BUYS INTO IT. You can't leave the house without being assailed by all that other fucking materialistic crap.

apple pie and pecan pie, although lemon cream cheese pie was my mom's specialty. (not lemon cheesecake, this was just lemon+sugar+cream cheese mixed together and chilled on a pecan crust)

also, cream cheese mixed with pistachio pudding on a pecan crust.

Have you ever tried to go grocery shopping the day after Thanksgiving? Or Bob forbid, go to the mall for something you actually need? Not a fun thing. I hate Christmas traffic, I hate Christmas shopping, I hate just about everything about Christmas. But... I have kids, so I have to get a little bit into it, they will have a tree, and they will have gifts on Christmas morning, and despite the fact that I'm agnostic (they're not) they'll read the Christmas story from the Bible on Christmas Eve, and we'll have an Advent calendar somewhere in the house... It is fun to watch them though, they get all excited and stuff. I just wish that we could forego all the other bullshit and just eat a lot of food and have fun watching the kids enjoy the season.

I like the idea, because I like pumpkin. But I have yet to taste a pie incarnation that I didn't find weird and squooshy. Now, sweet potato/pecan layer pie, yeah, I can deal. Too bad I'm not going to see my parents until December, because there is a recipe in one of the stacks of Bon Appetit next to my sister's old bed for an unbelievably good cranberry/maple syrup/walnut pie. Yum.

is it sad that I totally know where the last line in your post comes from?

Thanksgiving is insane at my house. My parents actually have a compition going on for about 6 years now on who can make the best turkey. It's downright scary
