lauralh: (something wicked this way comes)

• I saw The Salton Sea when it came out, but it was a lot more coherent this go-round. Also, ahem, more interesting for other reasons. Anyway it was just a dark movie (except for the gayass ending) and I was in a dark mood, so I enjoyed it. Since there were two years between the two viewings, I knew enough to keep interested but not so much as to bore me.

• Reg and I discussed Interpol's new album while listening to it. My take on it is that it's not as good as the first, specifically because every single song is identical. I mean, the tempo and singing is pretty much the same. There's nothing comparable to "PDA" or "Stella" or "Obstacle" (either) or "NYC" or "Leif Erikson"... Not that it's a bad album by any means, it's just Not As Strong.

• I finally got Reg on Pratchett. He finished The Colour Of Magic and The Light Fantastic and maybe even Mort this weekend. If he wasn't already taken, I'd totally do him.

• And I started on The Screwtape Letters. It's not exactly bedtime reading, however, so I didn't get very far. I kept having to rev my brain up a little. Pretty interesting so far, at the least very quotable.

I'm inclined to agree about the new Interpol. I like that it's a tad more melodic, but they may have even bested Art Alexakis in the art of writing the same song over and over.

As for "Bright Lights", it will be 2 years in November since I bought that album and I've never tired of it. In fact, I keep discovering new chunks of awesome. "The New" is amazing, and I never even really paid attention to that song until this past summer.

I started reading The COlour of Magic a while ago, and just couldn't get involved in it. Should I try again?

it's a good basis for the framework, but unless you used to read a lot of comics or fantasy as a kid you won't really "get" the jokes and shit. I'd start with "Wyrd Sisters" or "Guards! Guards!" or, if you're feeling irreverent, "Small Gods."

Irreverent is me. I may run to the bookstore later on. Thanks!

I hate CS Lewis. Kayla had both The Screwtape Letters and Mere Christianity on her bookshelf, and I'd read them when I was bored at her place.

It astonished me that Christians accepted Lewis as a "serious thinker" -- his only method of "argument" was to draw bad analogies.
