Pointy headed academic elites are always good for a laugh. I mean, really, it's hard to find good hand-wringing like that. It's a wonder he has any skin on his palms.
It's hard to know how to address something that's blatantly preposterous. A great example is this:
Because Nixon was foolish enough to record himself committing high crimes, we now think of Watergate as an episode in which, as the cliche goes, the system works. The flip side of that statement, however, is that the system almost failed. Certainly, just after Election Day 1972, when Nixon had routed George McGovern, many Americans were despairing that his thuggery would go unpunished.
Nothing of the sort happened "just after Election Day 1972." This is complete nonsense. When someone writes something like this, there's no way they can be anything other than the subject of ridicule by the informed.
But to award Bush another four years--provided he really wins this time--would signal that a majority of Americans not only tolerates but endorses his anti-democratic style.
At this point, anyone who clings to the provided he really wins this time flapdoddle shows himself to be the most wacko of the wackos.
Just how many of these "bedrock elements of liberal democracy" would have been actually evident in the presidencies of Washington & Jefferson? None? This is the stuff that comes from liberals who are just too cushy with their own worldviews.
