I am tired of smiling at people.

You know, no matter how cool or hot or pomo you are, there's someone just as such, who thinks your favorite band sucks.

Why is it assumed that you will automatically like the friends of your friends? People that, otherwise, you wouldn't even sniff at in the street, and you're forced to deal with them in a social capacity. If you were being paid, that would be one thing, but you're supposed to be having fun, and you can't because of these asshats.

No one with a paid livejournal who has checked his "friendsfriends" page more than once or twice believes that the "friend of a friend" relationship carries any information about "likeability."

forget likeability, I don't even want to have to waste time realizing these people exist. On LJ I can just not check the Friendsfriends page, but in RL it's not that easy.

I am tired of smiling at people.

Smiling at people is overrated. Unless they invoke the desire to smile in you, waste of effort. I'm not a smiley person by day, in general. I'm a little more jovial at night, but that's because I tend to avoid people who irritate me.

You know, no matter how cool or hot or pomo you are, there's someone just as such, who thinks your favorite band sucks.

Or book. Or film. Or artist of any sort. So it goes.

Why is it assumed that you will automatically like the friends of your friends?

This is why I'm very, very, very careful about recommending my friends to each other. They have to share common interests, attitudes, and senses of humor for me to feel reasonably confident about recommending them to each other. And it helps if I've known one or both for a good while.

But making a blanket assumption is shit-stupid. I've got too many friends of one sort or another who would find other friends of mine to be utterly intolerable. And I know it without needing direct evidence of the ugly sort.

That's why one should never make a concious attempt to be any of those things. It alleviates disappointment. As I get older and less of all three (by nature and not effort) I believe more and more that all attempts to the contrary should be punishable by public sterilization through butchery.

As for the bands, they all suck. Yours and mine included.

Aside of the deep philosophical issues touched by this post... what is "pomo"?

Or am I too white to understand you?
