Watched Catch Me If You Can and Underworld last night. The former was delightful, the latter, not. So i'm not one of those Leo haters - I never thought he was so cute but I thought he was a good actor forever. And he just kind of sucks you in to his world. Movie was kind of reminiscent of Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, except without the fancy camerawork. That's fine. I wasn't all that keen on the fifty-million flashback structure, either... it worked for Adaptation but that's because all the time changes involved different characters. But yeah I enjoyed it thoroughly, not the least because Tom Hanks was actually playing a funny character. I forgot how funny that kid can be.

I was thoroughly disappointed in Underworld though. I mean, sure it had a thin plot and no character development, but neither did Vampire Hunter D right? I can put up with that shit if the vampires are cool enough. And sadly, these vampires were not cool in the least. I mean they didn't kill people. At all. And therefore needed no charm, and therefore let it slide away. At first I thought the not killing people thing was new, but they mentioned towards the end that the coven mainly ate livestock and such back in the day. And so they've pretty much been not killing people for a couple centuries at the least. Clearly enough time to degrade into uncharming uncool assclowns.

Catch Me if You Can was a pretty entertaining film to watch and I too have never been a female devoted to the so called beauty that is Leo.
I think that Titantic kinda put him in a place that he shouldn't have been. Before that huge pile of crap calling itself a film he did some pretty fascinating and strong work in smaller films.
He should stick with that kind of thing.

Have you read Catch Me If You Can I found it to be more detailed and he did much more daring things in the book. Hilarious and awe-inspiring stuff. Plus he explains in careful detail how he got away with everything.

Leo Hater, sounding off!

Actually, I don't hate the guy, just his image. He's a damn fine actor, and I loved him in Gangs of New York, among other films, but his image (at least in the post-Titanic (gag) years annoyed the shit out of me. It's toned down somewhat in the past few years, though. He's back to being a serious actor, I think.

However, whenever I see him I'm reminded of The Beach and that GODAWFUL video game sequence (Danny Boyle, what the fuck were you thinking?).

While I did think that video game sequence was the weakest part of the movie, I thought it was amusing that his spiral into madness went in that direction. Besides that movie is awesome.

If by "awesome" you mean "Danny Boyle's worst [feature] movie." Granted, that's not saying much, 'cause Shallow Grave, Trainspotting, A Life Less Ordinary and 28 Days Later totally rocked my boat, but still. And yeah, it was an amusing direction, but direction doesn't always = result, and, and, but GAWD, that part just made me want to throw a shoe through the tv set. AUGH.

I haven't done much traveling (never been off the continent), but I disdain most americans even in america, so I can't imagine I'd enjoy them very much abroad, fouling up my vacation, their very presence a reminder of my reviled nation of origin.

yeah the vile thing is that mostly they just act the same way abroad as they do at home. So they stand out a lot more. A lot of people are unhappy with Prague b/c of the "americanization" of it. So yeah, I really related to the movie on that level, trying to find unspoiled places. Although my experience was more concerned with trying to find authenticism in native countries and such. a cute example: in rural St. Ignatius (where The Mission was filmed) in northern Argentina, we stayed in a hostel run by an elderly German woman and her daughter. (I had to hold back on the Nazi jokes and all.)

Eh, I just watched Underworld this weekend, and wasn't too offended. It had "Guns. Lots of guns." and plenty of black leather, and it moved along at a decent pace. Not great, but an acceptable addition to the genre.
