The cold and the humidity (and the smell of diesel trucks) make me think of Buenos Aires. There were some nice days, but mainly I think of the rain, and the drizzle, and the cafes and ice cream shops you'd duck into to warm up. AND THEN WALKING THROUGH THE STREETS OF BUENOS AIRES ALL JACKED UP ON CAFFEINE AND SUGAR!!

LOL

Sugar? Or "sugar?" I mean, it is South America.

sugar = cocaine?

Ahh, those were the days--when caffeine created a buzz.

Seriously, though, do not talk about Buenos Aires as it is like fifty odd degrees outside and raining heavily. Is Seattle in better shape than your Southern neighbor?

My mother was born in Buenos Aires, some where in the Palermo quarter they call 'Pacifico.' Also my friend and fellow writer, Fernando Sorrentino, lives there still with his family.

It's like no other place in South America.

You are very right about that. I've been to a good many places in South America and Buenos Aires reminded more of Europe than of Medellin, Columbia or Santiago, Chile. Even the people of Buenos Aires look European.

We got in a taxi one night and found it being driven by a long, blonde haired 20-something with a Metalica t-shirt. Turns out his grandfather moved the family there in 1945 from Germany. Hehe. There seemed to be alot of that.

I've spent a lot of time in Latin America -- Honduras, Panama, Guatemala, etc. And I spent some time in South America as well, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Peru,etc. But my time in Chile was memorable for the simple fact that I spent almost a month in prison (and lemme tell ya, that ain't no picnic) and was then escorted to the airport -- deportation at the point of an AK-47 makes ya tense.

People have no idea what goes on once they leave the tourist spots.

Wow, from what I saw of the way regular people lived in Santiago there is NO WAY prison there could be a picnic. Do you mind me asking how you ended up in a Chilean prison?

I had questionable credebtials (I had a press card), but their real reason was they thought I might be aiding in an overthrow of the government.

Hmmm...what year was this? Allende's year or Pinochet's 15? You wouldn't think that a revolution in Chile would even need outside help. There has/had to be PLENTY of poor, disgruntled, Chileans roaming about in their own filth to overthrow their government on their by themselves.

Of all the places I have traveled, and I've been around, Santiago was truely the worst. Hell, the people of Trinidad live better. On the ride from the airport to the hotel we passed through hell on earth. There were children running through the dirt, side streets naked, trash blowing through the air like snow and coming to rest on a grassless ground where I can only persume it was left to rot, as the ground was an equal mix of torn paper cups, empty cigarette packs, cigarette butts, shreds of paper, bits of plastic and finally dirt. The "nice" nieghorhood where my hotel was better, but only by Chilean standards. It was peppered with burned out and abandoned former office buildings occupied by prostitutes.

I don't think I will be going back to Chile anytime soon. Now Columbia, what a gorgeous country. I so wish they would get their shit together cause I'd love to make another tour of the place. Especially Medellin. That has to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. 72 degrees year round, and the women, beautiful =).

oh yeah, we stayed at a hostel run by germans
