the characters are messing with you

I bought this book for Steve for xmas, and he promptly lost it. But I needed change for a parking meter last week, as I was going downtown before 6pm, and I had none, so I scoured Steve's floor in search of. And I found that book. Started reading it. It was weird to be in the middle of this book watching The Mack though. Anyway it's a really gritty portrayal of the pimp lifestyle, but it's also kind of an interesting (yet sad) story. It goes through his whole life, starting with the babysitter who used him to masturbate at age 3, and ending with his mother dying and his decision to Go Square. But you get little autobiographical pieces of other pimps and whores, and it's all so far removed from my own reality that I'm not sure what to think about it. I suppose one way of looking at it is that it's a portrayal of African-American life in the Depression years, kind of like that Maya Angelou book, although with a lot more drugs and sex and cursing. Anyway if you're into that Real Pimp shit at all you should read it.
The Hulk
I heard it sucked, I heard it was great. I personally really enjoyed it. The fact that I'm the least familiar (out of all Marvel characters) with the Hulk's story didn't hurt, because boy was it far removed from that. Dad injects himself with starfish DNA and gives birth to a son with weird chemical structure, who then goes and gets Gamma Rayed, triggering the latent mutation. I think a lot of people had a problem with the fact that this setup took half the film to get to, but on the other hand how fucking boring would Hulk being chased by the army for EVEN LONGER be?
The only real complaint I had was the ending fight. I totally didn't get it. "it was too new age for me." I dunno. But anyway I like character development so I was happy in general with the movie. Also I'd heard that it was "slow" ... but I've watched Jarmusch films and French films, so my view of "slow" is obviously different than the ADHD movie-going public's definition.
