Andrew Sullivan on Sodomy

The Threat From Gay Marriage

The Case for Same-Sex Marriage

ABOLISH marriage

closing with a joke:

"George Bush the Elder's full name is George Herbert Walker Bush, but his son's name is George Herbert Hoover Bush."

That column from the Boston Globe has to be the weakest argument against gay marriage I have ever heard. He makes it even worse with the last paragraph. Just how many conventional marriages will founder under the pressure of that wave, just how many more will never be formed in the first place, we have no way of knowing in advance. Americans have good reason not to want to find out. Wow! I'm totally convinced now...

There are literally millions of people who are against gay marriage. Clearly not all of them can be complete idiots, so I'm just curious where they're all coming from. I think if I better understood the positions of these people it would be a little less confusing.

Perhaps I'm just too optimistic to believe that the linked article accurately represents the opinions of two thirds of the country.

It's pretty easy to understand really: they fear and hate homosexuals for the same ridiculous prejudice reasons some people still fear and hate people of different ethnic backgrounds.

Answers like that are a cop-out. How do you explain this?

In a recent compilation of surveys dating back to 1973, she shows that Americans have in many ways become more accepting of homosexuality. They are far more likely to have homosexual friends and to affirm the right of gays and lesbians to equality in job opportunities. Polls find majority support for homosexual teachers, doctors, politicians - even clergy. But not marriage.

He's certainly correct that the continuing mainstreaming of homosexuality will impel more people to experiment in that area, and if you find that icky in the same way that people tend to find incest icky than I could see your point.

I don't quite get why marriage is such a defining threshold though. If I was against homosexuality I would be far more concerned about Will & Grace being a primetime show than I ever would be about marriage. I guess it's easier to lobby the gov't than to lobby NBC though.

I don't really know either, but then I agree with that article about privatizing marriage, so I'm not really a barometer of mainstream america in that respect.

I've been saying for quite some time that Bush 2 is the worst US President since Herbert Hoover. Now I'm tempted to say he is even worse.

I liked the Andrew Sullivan article quite a bit. You may have noticed that someone (jokingly) replied to one of my LJ enteries "what were those men doing" to which I replied I don't know. Sodomy means so many things, not necessarily teh butt sex.

The arguement against gay marriage is absurd. I'm currently reading a biography by author Samuel Delany. He's gay. He knew he was gay since he was a teen. He experimented with heterosexual sex two times with a close female friend. She became pregnant and they married --- despite the fact that she knew he was gay and they agreed he would have sex with men outside of the marriage. It was hell for both of them. They are now divorced. Would a law making same sex marriage legal be the cause of his homosexuality and divorce? Most certainly not!

Just a polite heads up: I've recommended that everyone reading my LJ should check out this post. I guess I'm too lazy to copy the links myself.
