It's stupid to make blanket assumptions/judgements about ethical behavior, because unless you've actually been in that situation you don't know what you'd do. Now if you've been in the situation - you still can't judge because no situation is exactly like the other one.

Anyway. I can't even remember what brought that on. I edited the next ten thousand words in my novel. Only fifty to go. I didn't move from the computer for five hours, and I multi-tasked like a bitch. When I don't multitask I'm even better. What's really inspiring to me, I must admit, is reading [livejournal.com profile] avphibes old entries. Not the making-out-with-cute-guys parts, but the freelance-artwork parts. It almost made me want to draw something, but I couldn't find any paper. So I settled for editing the novel. I'll probably finish in a week or less, then I start the arduous rewrite project. And, hopefully, write some query letters and get an agent. Please please please.

I'm not quite sure where to start on this one.

Well, for starters, ethical behavior is determined by an accepted code of moral conduct. So, at least in theory, you don't have to have been in the situation to make a judgement.

And if you HAVE been in the situation then you aren't necessarily any better positioned to judge (unless you count having thought about it a lot more).

But ethical judgements are pretty worthless most of the time anyway.

First of all, "accepted codes of moral conduct" are stupid. Our whole current system of morals is really just the historical detritus of canon law codified by archbishops. Thusly, I do not think there are inherent moral or ethical values in any given action, but rather they are subjective based upon who you ask.

Just because they're subjective, that doesn't make them stupid.

I, for instance, am quite fond of the (sensible) moral code "thou shalt not steal my car."

I meant that the objective/universal codes were stupid, not the subjective ones.

so, does truth exist or is everything relative and/or subjective?

I'm asing your opinion be elaborated a bit more. I've been having this conversation with a good friend of mine (who is now back from india doing research for some christian book and getting his masters of divinity in Orlando).

Whenever I see him we still rock out to Iron Maiden and play guitar for long stretches.

I think that reality is objective. If you're ever talking to someone who doesn't believe this, tie them up and beat them with a baseball bat.

I make blanket assumptions about behavior. But only two-

One- people who do speed are to be avoided.

Two- People who are conservative right-wing Republicans should move to Mars.

That's about it for me.

I like your second blanket assumption.

But, I think, instead of wasting the resources and fuel to send them to Mars, we should just abduct them and stick them in forced labor camps. That way we can at least get some return on our investment. Maybe have their over-seers be single, impoverished, minority mothers. Just for proper mind-fucking. I have a feeling most single, impoverished, minority, mothers won't have any problem treating right wing convervative republicans badly.

Well I am trying not to play their game by being hateful, so I figured if we just sent them somewhere else we could pretend they don't exist. And I am sure Nike, Rupert Murdoch, AOL/TW, and other branches of corporate government would be happy to foot the bill. :-D
