"Fortune Magazine is crowing over the million songs that iTunes users downloaded in the first week of operation. Wow. One million songs in a week. Morpheus could swamp that in three days of file-sharing, I'd wager. And despite the miniscule size of the Apple network effect, I'll bet iTunes runs into far more connectivity problems than Morpheus, because of the inherent losses that a single server suffers against a p2p network."

Apparently there's a great *nix utility called "convert" for images. I think I will be making great use of this instead of futzing around with FrontPage. I apparently am going to be making a bunch of web sites in the near future for me and Steve's grand plans. He owns several domains that are just sitting there, and we finally have some ideas. I think Seattle Mafia needs a logo with some Sinfest-style kids in trench coats and raver pants, holding machine guns. Now I just need an artist.

Speaking of "art", Dilbert this week has been so fucking good.

But Apple has proven that you CAN make money selling things that people can just steal anyway. It's also a good move for the future, because when DRM comes and Microsoft takes over your computer to make sure you've paid for all the software, and music and movies that you're using they'll have the inside track on this kind of technology.

I'll bet iTunes runs into far more connectivity problems than Morpheus, because of the inherent losses that a single server suffers against a p2p network.

Right. Because as a multi-billion dollar transnational corporation Apple probably can't afford like, network engineers and big pipes. Also a single IP is NOT a single server. Plus 'single-server' models have the advantage of consistency. Nobody is ever going to say, 'I was going to download and pay for that song, but the person who had it signed off, now I have to wait.'

This sounds like a disgruntled Apple hater trying to find yet more reasons why Apple is doomed to fail. They do a lot wrong, but give them credit for what they do right. Also a million songs is only for Apple users in America. Even though Apple users are smarter, richer, and more creative so we'd expect a higher percentage of them to buy music, when iTunes comes to Windows and that market opens up, they're going to be making a lot more money than they are now.
