You know, if you just *don't file* that one year, the odds against them coming after you any time in the next ten years are pretty freaking slim.

I personally failed to file for three years in a row, filed the fourth year for just that year, then caught all three missing years up in one fell swoop with the concurrent filing on the fifth year. Never heard a peep.

I'm just a little anxious about that, because I have bad luck. If I get caught I'll have to pay all sorts of penalties and interest, I mean.

I hear you - but personally, I'd be a bit MORE nervous about filing false info.

If you get caught filing late, you might get stuck with a few hundred bucks in penalties and interest and etc. If you get caught filing shit that bogosifies your tax debt from $6600 to $600... eesh.

I also get the impression that filing a return that shows you not making enough money to live on for a year tends to raise more red flags than simply *not filing one*. But YMMV, IANAL, etc etc etc.

Although you can always use the "oops, I made a mistake and didn't proof read" excuse. Doctors who fraud medicade get away with it all the time ;)
