So I'm the kind of person who wavers between complete decentralization of government (mostly anarchy with small pockets of groups that make their own rules, basically), and complete "benevolent" dictatorship, with me or one of four other people I trust in charge.

But I think the best decision is kind of a combination. Every five years, you take a "Independent Critical Thinking" skills test. Based on your score, you get a certain license to do, well, whatever you want. Within certain limits. If, for example, you passed the drugs section, you can use whatever drugs you want. If you passed the guns section, same deal. If you pass all sections, you can pretty much do whatever you want... The test questions would also probably be voted on, just to make it fair.

Everyone else of course has to follow all the rules. But hell, that's what sheep want anyway, right? To be told what to do.

I've contemplated similar possibilities: Fascist meritocracy, dammit!

The sheep want to be herded. It's cruel to let them make bad decisions for themselves anyhow.

Good way to minimize the SUVs.

no one would think of themselves as sheep. it's like that monty python life of brian moment: "we are all individuals"..."I'm not" ... "shhh" moment. eventually you'd have a commitee deciding to make the tests easier so that the kids who don't make the cut aren't made fun of in school or whatever.

If you passed the test you'd go to a different school.

Also, you couldn't vote on the test questions (except the very first round) unless you passed it.

ever read Crime and Punishment? methinks this could turn out badly if too many people think they are the special ones who should get special powers.
i'm really all for an anarchy made up of communes and hermits, we'd just need a few superheroes around when imperialism gets hot again.
