[livejournal.com profile] astralbeats sent me two magazines (TRM and STU) from Australia (although they're zine size and free, they're magazine quality) which rocked me. One was mainly about the techno scene, and one was just really general stuff about Australia, and in fact had articles about the USA and Ireland as well. The most remarkable thing about it was the beauty of it. I mean it was just clearly done by people who gave a fuck about art and design. Like maybe Lindsey when she gradumates.

And the ads were even better. There's a million of them, but you don't care, because they're so aesthetically and intellectually pleasing: clean lines, hip, and witty. Terribly impressive stuff. Why are American ads so bad? I mean maybe I'm just reading the wrong magazines, but even in say GQ, which has pretty decent ads, they just do not compare to this.

(Whoah, random: I was looking for a TRM website and I couldn't find one, but I did find this writeup on Christopher Lawrence, and I was like "That name sounds familiar." Sure enough. He was also at the fetish party at Medusa the last Friday in February.)

if you have to ask, it doesn't matter.

I knew you were gonna say that... damn you "girl" types with your cryptic little ways of quasi-"communication", anyway.

I think it's less a matter of what than who (and "what were you on?")

yeah, those little promo mags are pretty neat. and very trendy. it's funny cause just today in my photo as graphics class, we had to bring in examples of stuff that we liked, and lots of people had trm and stuff like that. you walk into any trendy clothing shop and they have a whole pile of different little magazines and stuff for you to pick up. it's kinda cool, and good for students like us who need constant inspiration/ideas/fodder.
i'm sort of surprised (but pleased) that you thought it was impressive... it seems australia is usually last on the list of impressive places, at least when it comes to anything cultured/trendy. but i think maybe in regards to design and stuff, we're doing okay. hurrah! and yeah, that is pretty much the stuff i am learning at uni/will be doing when i graduate. yay, i loves it.

Yeah I really have not seen anything that comes close to that... the next best thing is our local Minty (http://mintymag.phpwebhosting.com/) which is still not quite on the level in the printmag scene.

with regards to australia, i don't know about sydney but melbourne itself has its own design culture with observations to their posters, flyers, magazines designs. i read somewhere before that it could be that they are so *contained* that they actually managed to develop an identity of their own :) in fact let's just say that i dig australian stuff quite abit. but i'm not talking BIG KEV of course!

i love picking up the free mags like Beat, TRM in melbourne, now that i'm in singapore. there's alot of things which aint too eye-pleasing :/
