So I bought a few graphic novels today.

The Tale of One Bad Rat, Bryan Talbot
Nobody, Alex Amado, Sharon Cho, Charlie Adlard
Transmetropolitan books 1,2, Ellis/Robertson
The Official Lloyd Llewellyn Collection, Daniel Clowes
I would have bought Fray by Whedon but it doesn't look like that's been bound into a paperback yet. Neither has Daniel Boring, although that was in hardback. Spent too much money anyway; first time in YEARS I went into a comic book shop and didn't buy a Cerebus book.

I've been enamored of the comics medium for years and years; I'm sure half the reason I like SF is because of reading X-Men and Spiderman as a kid. And of course that's also the reason I don't like HARD sf, I'm sure. But I guess it was the interweb that pushed me over to the "just a bunch of people talking" realm of comics. And then my friend Keith told me that I should see Ghost World, and afterwards he sent me the comic.

[livejournal.com profile] scooterboy1234 and [livejournal.com profile] frogchildren as well inspire me - although I can't draw for shit and hate them for being able to. I still think [livejournal.com profile] vileinfestation needs to get off his ass and do that WTC/Titanic parody he used to talk trash about, and I think [livejournal.com profile] wanton_bliss should do some short comics about his short stories. I would love to have more books by people I actually sort of kind of know.

You should check out Black & White by Taiyo Matsumoto. Brutal, yet touching.

Also, Sandman should be considered a must read in this domain.

But that's kind of a lot of comics. You should ask around to see if there's anyone you can borrow it from.

I read the first book, which I suppose is before it started to be any good...

No, it's good in the first book, but it's a little slow... I admit it takes a little while to get up to speed, but when all is said and done, even the first book ends UP being good -- it's an epic story, and any given part of it ends up being almost as important as any other part: including the first book.
