I'm not really a Matt Damon fan, but I am a stupid spy fan, so I gladly paid my $3 to go to The Bourne Identity at the cheap movie theater last night. And I did enjoy it, probably more than the Bond film. It wasn't so goddamn over-the-top. Not that I expect Bond movies to be under-the-top, but I do feel that Die Another Day wasn't as restrained as even Goldeneye. And plus Frank Potente rocks. She's not traditionally gorgeous, and while she was "the chick" she was treated more like a sidekick than a sex object. I haven't read the book so I don't even know how much she was supposed to be in it, but I'm glad with what they did with her.

I also finished The Phantom of the Opera last night. Fuck Andrew Lloyd Webber man. He's perverted a classic ghost story with "music" and "love". OK so that's in there too, but the treatment is more suspenseful and dreary in the original. Liked it.

Bah...

I wanted over-the-top. And my needs were met. Bond is so damned tired, terribly played out. The only way to keep it interesting is to just go completely nuts, not allow more than a minute of exposition to go by between explosion or fight scenes, and have every single line a questionable pun (assuming that is not redundant). They did this and did it well.

granted...

it was totally completely ridiculous, but other than that I didn't get the "bond" feel. Especially when he got captured in the beginning and went through the whole movie fueled by revenge. Huh?

actually, they ran out of books two or three movies ago. They're completely winging it now.

The thing about Bond is, you're not supposed to take it seriously. If you go to see a Bond movie, you're there to see the girls, the guns, and the gadgets. Forget character development! It's not a movie you're supposed to analyze. I think that's why the beginning of Die Another Day was so strange. Bond doesn't get captured, he's too cool. He doesn't undergo torture, he's too British. If it was classic Bond, he would have seduced the female torturer and escaped within five minutes.

I'm ranting again, aren't I? Heh.

Yeah, I totally agree. What was the point of having that kickass Korean chick torturing him otherwise? It was just like a big tease, you're all like "Ah, kickass Korean chick torturing him, he'll get out... oh wait. What? WHAT THE FUCK?" it just set the tone for the whole movie...
