Indeed. It's a day off from work/school, take the time and shut the fuck up.

I don't really get the buynothing stuff, either. People will buy things they want/need. The only realistic dent this makes is cutting down on impulse buys for one day. I don't know what power this fights or how it hurts said power.

I think that the fact that it isn't actually the busiest shopping day of the year is beside the point. Every damn store advertises the hell out of products with ridiculously low prices, making everyone feel like they're obligated to wake up at the crack of dawn to buy a bunch of shitty presents they don't need, and step on whomever gets in their way. And the news stories about shopping.. UGH! It's the mob-consumer mentality the campaign is against, not necessarily just buying stuff on one day of the year. :)

Yeah, but it's just a big red sticker that says "buy nothing day." But every day from thanksgiving to xmas should be buy nothing day in that case. The reason I posted that story is because it shows that consumers just go out because they're bored, not necessarily to even buy stuff. I don't get that at all - but I only "browse-shop" at bookstores or music shops, and if they were ever crowded I'd stop that too. If I go anywhere else it's 'cos I want to buy something, and god forbid I should need a new shower curtain on xmas eve, ya know? or a can of soup the day before thanksgiving.

(Steve and I were talking about how Christmas should be like leap year. Each year there can be gift-giving and a day off, but only every four years should they make a big fucking deal about it with music and sales and Santa and movies and other obnoxiousness.)
