My housemate had been talking up Neighbours' Thursday nights for a while, as a good place to just dance, and so last night when he said he was going I'm like "Me too." I wore one of my sexier outfits, not realizing I still would be marked as a lesbian, and off we went.

Eighties. Dance. Party.

Which is all right, but it made me feel like I was in jr. high, especially since none of the guys were interested in me. I spent a little too much time playing "Gay or Straight?" before I decided to forget it and just check out the girls. Not that I like girls at all, but the ones I do like look like, well, me. Small and petite, with or without curves, invariably short-haired and brunette. There was one with chin-length hair and glasses who was adorable. I danced with her a little, but I did feel a bit out of my league. There were more cute guys than girls there, but usually I never think any girls are cute anywhere, so it was novel. The cute 20-something lesbians did it for me. I was grinning like a moron at them.

But that was interspersed with dancing to New Order, Depeche Mode, the Cure, Belinda Carlisle.. and looking at Bronson Pinchot. Well, at least he looked like Balki, and honestly the more I looked at him, the more I had to wonder. He always had a chick dancing with him, too.

Finally, when we were getting ready to leave, I watched one of the girls we met up with start to kiss a drag queen. At first I thought it was just going to be a friendly good-night kiss, quick peck on the lips like I give to my European friends, but um. It got better. And better. Until I was like "Dude, check out the show!" From what I could figure, she made out with the drag queen because she was freaked out from being kissed by a girl. I told my housemate "too bad you weren't the first straight guy she saw..."

neighbours used to be a gay club back in the day, but as far as i understand, it's gone through the straight-gentrification process, and at this point, there are more straight folx there than gay on any given night. i've been to the 80s night a few times .. quite fun, but quite straight too.

yeah there were a number of hetero-couples there, I guess it was about 60/40 gay-lesbian/straight.
