I finally finished A Scanner Darkly. Holy Christ that's a fucked up book. I mean OK, the other books of his were fucked up too but this one takes the cake. It's not really SF at all, either - it's just basically about a made-up drug and some addicts, with a healthy dash of paranoia/conspiracy theories thrown in.

And I've probably said it before, but Philip K. Dick is now my favorite author. For a while there it was Orson Scott Card, but his writing is like a child's compared to PKD. I haven't even read that many of his books, but after only two I was convinced anyway. Must must must check out more from the library.

Ubik is a great one. Phil Dick wrote a screenplay for Ubik. It's unpublished, but is supposedly archived with many other non-published writings at the University of California at Fullerton (is that where they are?).

I wish someone would make the thing!

have not yet read it, alas. What sucks is that it was one of the library books I had checked out at the beginning of this year, but I always check out too many and didn't get to it before I pretty much changed my life around and moved into the city. I COULD have renewed it but I probably still wouldn't have gotten to it.

I've read every Philip K. Dick book at least twice. Most of them far too many times to admit without being ashamed (not that I haven't read a lot of other authors works multiple times as well).

Some find Scanner best, others don't like it. I loved it when I first read it. My favorite might be Radio Free Albemuth. Recommended if you haven't read it.

I found your LJ via Lara7. I'm enjoying it.

One time a friend introduced me to a lady at a party as "a big Dick fan" before realizing his unintentional double entendre. Thank whatever this unfortunate moniker didn't stick with me!

I dunno, I love saying "I need more Dick" and all that. Then again, I'm a straight female.
