Willy Wonka
Jun. 24th, 2002 10:08 amI think that movie has always creeped me out. I must have been seven the first time I saw it, mainly being afraid of the Oompa Loompas - their song is in such a creepy minor key, and plus, you know, they look freakish. Also I was convinced all the kids were dead by the end, even after the reassurances. Willy himself didn't scare me, because, hey, it's Gene Wilder. He's so gentle in appearance, voice, and manners.
But last night it was on TV, and WOW is Wonka a psychopath. I mean it's totally understandable, he's been locked up in a candy factory with only his "personal assistant" and Oompa Loompas to talk to. Of course he's going to care more about the candy than some little bratty kids' lives. That doesn't make it normal, just understandable. Plus, the fact that it's Gentle Gene playing him makes it all the more creepy.
