It was like um, what. Requiem for a Dream without the style and interesting messages. Or maybe like a slightly better-written Kids, with better music. But really. It was too long and just miserable.

Basically it's about these junior high kids who are all angsty and shit, and their only solace is this singer Lily Chou-Chou. But it takes over ninety minutes of this before we see just how bad Being a Kid is. There's the obligatory 14-year-old prostitute of course, and then the obligatory rape scene, and then finally the obligatory murder.

Not to mention the obligatory filmed on video scenes. Way too many of those. I dunno man, if you're gonna have a terribly depressing and disturbing movie, you should at least have a plot and/or pretty filming. The worst part is - there were definitely beautiful shots in the movie, but all the goddamn video bits overshot them. What is the deal with the handheld obsession? I admit the technique worked really well for the rape scene - in the sense that it made me want to throw up. And hey, guess what, I'm a normal human being, 14-year-old kids raping their classmate ALREADY makes me want to throw up, you don't have to throw the camera around the room too.

Stylistic excesses, I suppose, offend me. If a plot is already totally extreme, you should cut back on the indie stylism. Because, you know, usually the indie stylism overshadows lack of extreme/interesting plot, so you just automatically assume when you see wacky camerawork that there's no substance. But there was so it just threw me off.
