of all the books
Apr. 14th, 2010 08:44 amI've been putting in time with Vampire/Zombie books. Not like super trashy ones but pretty good reinterpretations. Well, some are better than others. My favorite so far is the steampunk Zombie book Boneshaker by Cherie Priest, which I just finished last night. It takes place in the 19th century, one where the Alaskan gold rush took place a few decades early, and the Civil War is still going on in 1880. But that's just a backdrop for Seattle, which has grown faster in this world because of both factors.
Anyway. A mad scientist invented a machine to drill through Alaskan ice - the Boneshaker - and its test run hit a vein of poison gas under Seattle - the Blight. Which turned people into "rotters", and a wall went up around Seattle. The only people who remained behind the wall are the ones who could figure out how to clean the air, and this nightmare walled city is where the action takes place. Zombies and dirigibles and steampunk, oh my! But, also, very relatable characters living in and outside the walls.
So yeah, pretty fun book. Check it out.
(oh yeah, and the author is on LJ.)
