I've been putting in time with Vampire/Zombie books. Not like super trashy ones but pretty good reinterpretations. Well, some are better than others. My favorite so far is the steampunk Zombie book Boneshaker by Cherie Priest, which I just finished last night. It takes place in the 19th century, one where the Alaskan gold rush took place a few decades early, and the Civil War is still going on in 1880. But that's just a backdrop for Seattle, which has grown faster in this world because of both factors.

Anyway. A mad scientist invented a machine to drill through Alaskan ice - the Boneshaker - and its test run hit a vein of poison gas under Seattle - the Blight. Which turned people into "rotters", and a wall went up around Seattle. The only people who remained behind the wall are the ones who could figure out how to clean the air, and this nightmare walled city is where the action takes place. Zombies and dirigibles and steampunk, oh my! But, also, very relatable characters living in and outside the walls.

So yeah, pretty fun book. Check it out.

(oh yeah, and the author is on LJ.)

I just finished Boneshaker last week, I liked it too. Good combination of Seattle stuff, zombies, steampunk and fast moving action, it would totally make a good movie. I thought the ending could have been more substantial though, it was a bit of a let down to me.

I just started Happy Hour of the Damned, which is decidedly more trashy, but also set in Seattle and featuring zombies (and vampires). So far the first bar they are at seems exactly like Noc Noc.

Nice. Yeah, I didn't really understand the choice made about not expounding before the epilogue.

I also read A Rush of Wings which isn't set in Seattle but the sequel is. Vampires and angels oh my.
