Lower Queen Anne in Seattle is home to many restaurants, shops, apartments, the Space Needle, and a few bars. Despite being an easy detour on our way downtown, we almost never end up there (unless we're visiting the Romanian who lives there). I really know of only three bars there (Tini Bigs, Watertown, and the Liquid Lounge), and have only been to two until last night. Tini Bigs and the Liquid Lounge failed to impress me (except for the latter's Tuesday Drink specials), and Watertown was similarly disappointing. The decor was not too bad, and the drinks specials did me right (Bacardi and Coke kept me up two hours later, god I'm caffeine-sensitive), but the space was a little lame and the clientele were lamer (don't get me started on the music). The way the space was set up, it made it seem like there were very few people there, even when more people started to get there. And the people we could see made me feel OK about wearing jeans. Not that I have anything against people wearing jeans, I know it's Seattle, but do they all have to?

Oh well. We went to the Contour and it was slightly less lame, if only because it's the lameness we've come to know and love. Also the no one in the smallish crowd was wearing baseball caps, and the drinks were strong. Plus the music was better, and there were fire dancers. Fire dancers always make everything better.

Just finished watching Impromptu, a rather charming period piece about the beginnings of the affair between Chopin (Hugh Grant) and Sand (Judy Davis). I never thought Judy Davis was all that, but she definitely has a remarkable voice. I thought she carried the role well.

And of course Hugh Grant was utter perfection. Sure he pretty much plays the same character all the time, but he's so good at it. Tis a pity he's now a popular commodity, because I've loved every period piece he's done. Although I admit that either period piece good-guys or current day villains are equally enjoyable when he plays them.
