a few musings
Feb. 4th, 2002 11:15 amIt's very interesting driving in fog in a part of the country where people don't turn their headlights on except at night.
If you use ordinary coffee with instant hot chocolate mix, you get something almost, but not quite, entirely unlike mocha.
So far there doesn't seem to be any explicit or even implicit Battle of the Sexes like there was at my last job - where the long-suffering husbands would bitch and moan about being taken on furniture expeditions to find the perfect lampshade or whatever. They'd never say "my wife" or whatever, they'd say, "women." Which bugged me, because, hey, I'm a woman, and my furniture shopping technique is limited to browsing the IKEA catalog in the bathroom.
I wasn't the only person bugged by the Old Boys' Company, and in fact in talking with female coworkers, I was probably the least bugged. But in retrospect I can see that my female coworkers were right about the women there being treated differently. Maybe it's just a Southern thing; I dunno. But so far here I'm being treated like a competent developer instead of a glass unicorn.
I'm not going to use my new weblog at work (see previous entry), because even though I don't think these people are anal jerkwads that check the proxy log, there's no reason to risk www.laural.com showing up. So I'll continue to post friends-only entries here during the day.
I sold a couple of CDs off of Half.com over the weekend. I'll try to send them out today, if not then tomorrow. That's twenty dollars I didn't have before. One of the CDs was a gift from Fuckwit, the other I bought in college and almost never listen to. At any rate both are now on my hard drive, so I won't miss them too much. And if this actually works, I'll be rather happy. Fuck used CD stores man, they give you $5 at the most and double the price. This way everyone comes out ahead.
