I posted this "best movies of 2001" on Backwash, but I'll copy it here.
My top five:
1) This movie ripped me apart and sewed me back together. Wonderful portrayals, sad and yet funny, amazing direction/sets/music choices - perfect.
2) This movie just ripped me apart. A carefully constructed caricature of Hollywood turned inside out by dream symbolism.
3) The story resonates - who hasn't looked for a soulmate, think they've found them, only to have everything torn apart - and the music kicks ass.
4) Real teenagers doing real teenager things, and friendships being torn apart.
5) The first movie of the year to get serious attention, it still deserves it for taking the Seinfeldian "backwards show" concept, and giving a damned good reason for it.
Anyone else have a list? Or just wanna argue mine?
