I'm going to keep all my media on an external hard drive, and I want something that will a) play movies/music b) surf the internet c) edit photos. This is all I want. I suppose I should get a netbook, as I also want something light. But I haven't bought a computer in like 10 years. I'm initially checking out the Asus T91. Anyone know anything about it?

Most people I know that have bought netbooks are really into the "Sammys" (AKA Samsung). I think the biggest drawback with netbooks, besides the hard drive space which won't be a problem for you, is the limited RAM capabilities. I'd think if you are using a resource hog like Photoshop to edit photos, you'd want to try to get one that can handle a decent amount of RAM (or use GIMP instead, it's free, open source, and almost as good).

i have a 2.8 pound asus from 3-4 years ago that i want to sell for cheap. i have to fix a few things with it but it'll be a good deal. won't be as fast as a brand new one o'course

(oh, and i loved it... i only got another laptop because i gave it to kirt when his got stolen when my car got stolen, but then he gave it back)

I started looking at the year-old version actually, a bit more in my price range and about as fast. I won't be able to purchase anything till Feb but if that's not too late, I can ping you then. The main thing I want is XP (sigh) so I can watch Netflix streaming on demand.

don't do it, you'll be dissatisfied with how underpowered the machines are, and all netbooks have an integrated graphics chip which won't be great for video.

netbooks make a good secondary machine for portability reasons, but certainly not a primary one. the money would be better put to use on a midsize notebook. i just don't want you to spend money on something that you'll regret later for not even doing the things you want it to do very well.
