It's been my own experience (YMMV) that the adorable-cum-irritating things were catalysts helping the breakup. Not to say the feeling isn't amplified afterward.

And there are also the cases where it was always annoying but I was in denial because she let me put it in her.

other potential explanation:

Those "adorable quirks" really were adorable, but now that you've lost them they just rub the raw edges of the separation, and you feel anger to avoid feeling the hurt.

Two sides of the same coin. Courage Wolf agrees with me that the first interpretation was better, though.

part of it could be changing as a person too. i don't necessarily find the same things cute/appealing right now as i did 10 years ago.
