It's not that surprising. Buchanan is both smarter and less right wing than he's given credit for. Honestly, over the course of time he's given the GOP a lot more shit than he's ever given the dems.

Plus, he's always hated the Bush family and John McCain.

And, he's a rabidly anti-war dude (because he doesn't think America should intervene anywhere.)

That's why he ran against Bush Sr. back in the day.

oh yeah, I used to be on his side on 100% of the issues (when I was christian and all that) so I know these things. He's what they call "paleoconservative" and called Nixon a fake republican. I'm not surprised he feels that way, just that he said it in such a forum - did you see his co-commentators?

I've read almost everything Hunter S Thompson ever wrote, and while he definitely said mean things about Buchanan, they were still pretty good friends. One of the few politicians with a sense of humor.
