Finally saw Iron Man. As an action movie, it's probably the best one I've seen in five years. As a comic book movie, well, top three. But as a superhero movie, nothing else even comes close. Not Batman or X-Men or Spiderman. And I liked all those (first in franchise) films. There are two things that make this movie a cut above. First, Robert Downey Jr. He's got the right mix of brilliance, humor, and humanity. With just a look or two, he convinces you he's a real person. The movie could have just been about Tony Stark's fall from grace. The superhero stuff was rather secondary, but still necessary.

And the other thing? The plot was perfectly cynical and depressing. I mean, Spiderman came close, with him letting the criminal who killed Uncle Ben go free, but Stark's origin is far more dependent. If Parker hadn't been bit, Uncle Ben still would have been killed, whereas almost everything that happens to Stark is his own fault.

(And all the Dude ever wanted was his rug back.)
