If you're going to lose a year's worth of mp3 backups, it's quite useful to live with someone whose music collection greatly intersects with your tastes.

Although it also helps if they keep their music in one directory instead of three.

I've been collecting music collections from friends lately. Some of them have been hilariously disorganized - one person had five identical copies of the same album in different locations.

Sorting these, and listening to them to find data corruption, is going to take a very very very long time.
