I agree with this.
The food in LA is great, but the bars were WAY too expensive.

Driving in LA > Driving in SF. Although I only really have done it at night or on holidays.

What is wrong with soft water?

I didn't drive in SF so I don't know.

All us damn cyclists go out of our way to make life difficult for motorists here... haven't you heard?

The absurd population density probably contributes as well.

You see, San Diego has all of those pros, and none of those cons. :)

I made the mistake of visiting LA by myself without an itinerary. I managed little in the way of actual recreation, and a lot in the way of watching cable in hotel rooms, and riding trains and buses to nowhere looking for things that I couldn't find. One of the higher points was getting drunk at an LAX bar right before my flight back.

I did snap a picture of Compton from the Metro, which Craig was impressed by.

Though one good thing was that I went in early October, so it was only around 80 out and actually quite lovely.

it was a "dry heat"
which meant that it took me 2 hours instead of 30 minutes to want to shoot myself

I live in LA.

Yes I do.

After awhile the good burgers wear thin and all that's left is sitting in the heat and smog, stuck in traffic fro two hours a day.

On the upside, my house is tiny and no one speaks english.

Los Angeles: putting the "sprawl" in "urban" since 1850.

It's not so much that no one finds anything wrong with it as everyone's just resigned.

And don't knock the weather. L.A. during July/August ain't great, I grant you, but it still beats 90+ with one hundred percent humidity, which is what I used to have to deal with.

If you come to L.A. in any other season, it's almost uniformly gorgeous. Late fall/early winter is my favorite; temperature is usually in the 60s during the day, and drops to the upper 40s at night - just cold enough for you to need your fancy schmancy leather jacket to go out.

well yeah, the weather certainly beats almost everywhere else I've lived but Seattle.

(I grew up in Vermilion Parish.)

I really like it out there. It might just be because I'm used to New York people, but everyone on the West Coast seems a lot friendlier and open-minded. I have a much easier time making friends and finding dates than on the East Coast.

The pizza's crap though.

I've only lived in the South, and Seattle.

My bad. I assumed since you knew Perich you were from the Boston or Baltimore area.

I guess you can pretty much disregard everything I just said. Especially the part about the pizza; L.A. is about on par with the South pizza-wise.
