I read The Talented Mr. Ripley this weekend. I saw the movie years ago, and was like the only person who actually liked it, but of course the book is better and more interesting. The beginning is mostly the same, although there's a huger focus on how standard the-world-owes-me-a-living white-boy he is, and that's more of why he killed Dickie than anything sexual. Although there were definitely plenty of homundertones. But most of the book is about how he thinks he will get caught. And that's mostly it. I loved it and will be reading the next couple of books for sure.
