"The day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the Supreme Being as his father, in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter."- Thomas Jefferson, letter to John Adams, April 11, 1823

Europe is hardly the liberal holy land people make it out to be. Obviously it depends on the country. In a number of countries (such as Spain most recently) there has been a very angry backlash against pro-gay legislation. If anything, it's just that the liberals currently have political representation in a lot of countries - as in America, though, this goes in waves and we're seeing the first signs of a conservative backlash in Europe just as we saw in America six years ago.

Definitely. Although they arguably have more racial tensions and in some countries (like Italy) way less freedom of press. But you're right - there are areas where Europe has it together. I just think the European countries get idealized by people without factoring in a lot of the challenges they're facing.

The day may yet come, though probably not, you know, in our lifetimes.

I think that was the perspective shown in The Last Temptation of Christ too, wasn't it?
