I remember reading that they changed vending machines from numbers to letters because people would attempt to key in the price for the item.
Are any of those digits letters?
I guess it could also be the case that they have a standard exterior, the part with the keypad, and optional interior racks which might extend into the third digit. Though, that doesn't seem likely. That would be a lot of items.
That might be it then. They have three digits where no price has that many. If the consumer only keys in two, either nothing happens or the machine's display indicates it is waiting for the third digit. Then the consumer has to look back and realize their mistake.
If they used letters, there could be no initial mistake since they obviously couldn't key in the price. (Roman numerals and prices excepted)
