I remember growing up with hippie kids and they were a bunch of closet sugar addicts. Their parents would say, "ooooo sugar is the devil. Have some carob". The kids knew they were being gypped. The second they got into school (unless they were put in the local hippie private school) they would make friends with all the kids who ate a lot of processed food. I knew one girl who would take her allowance and buy donuts like crazy. Over the years she gained a bit of weight because of it. See hippie parents just do their kids no favors.

Can I also mention the assholes who name their kids Butterfly, Canyon, Snowhawk and December?

Hi There!

Hey!! I want to be a hippie!! The only thing I don't understand about hippies is the not washing thing. I just don't GET smelling bad. How tough is it to run a hose over yourself. Maybe that would take some of the itchiness out of the hemp.


Okay, having said that....

Hippies get to do all kinds of psychotropic drugs, listen to Hendrix and Dylan and Morrison and Joplin, and then, and then, get to have INDISCRIMINATE SEX WITH A WHOLE BUNCH OF PEOPLE!! Dude! Duuuuude!! Where the hell do I sign up. And they're all non-violent and shit! How can you not love that? "Hey man, I'm gonna smoke all your shit and fuck your girlfriend, okay?". "Whoa, far out, dude. That's rad, man. Peace". And best of all, they piss off the Religious Right!! They grow out their beards, wear handmade clothing, walk around barefoot, talk about love and forgiveness and brotherhood, and then all the people that believe in JESUS get offended!!! It's called irony, ladies and gentlemen. It's the universe's way of showing us humor. Plus, I love the smell of patchouli. Leg and armpit hair on women doesn't bother me. It's natural, why are women expected to have the skin texture of a newborn baby eel??

But you know, take a shower sometime. That's the only thing I don't get about t3h H1ppi3s. [shrug]

When I was a little kid I thought that Ave rats all sorta smelled the same (that is, smelled bad). Wasn't until much later that I found out that they elected to smell like that (that is, like patchouli).

I think its mostly that being a hippie has become a meaningless cliche. Its not really that counter-culture anymore. you can wear your parents old tye-die, stop wearing deoderant, sell hemp necklaces and smoke weed with your underfed dog, and you automatically belong to some new cultural element. big deal, how hard is that. its nothing more than another group of semi-like minded people trying to fit in with each other and be accepted, because they never found that at church or computer club or little league.

well here's the thing. you dont have to stink to buy organic produce (or god forbid, meat). you dont have to bang away in a shitty drum circle at hempfest to know that the drug war is a stupid idea, and you certainly dont have to look like a subversive to be a subversive. everyone has to mess around for a while to find out who they are, but eventually you should start making decisions for yourself and not based on some cultural template.
