I said I had a decent group of friends, but they were certainly the nerdy group. I didn't get to any level of actual popularity until late high school.

My group of friends, up until high school, were the "cool kids." And damn we were cool. In 4th grade we collected pencils and made up our own language. We ruled.

Wait. Everyone loved me in high school except one guy, who swore I was a lesbian. But that won me homecoming princess.

Wow.

I was popular.

What the hell happened?

I lived out in the sticks, so while i new a bunch of kids at school, i rarely ever got to hang out with them outside of school.

I was in that situation as well, which I'm sure I can directly blame for all my problems with drug abuse and social maladjustment now. =)

I was not actually an "army brat", but you didn't have any other option implying that it was me that did the constant moving around. So I picked it anyway.

I had friends until 12. Puberty was not kind to me, plus my good friend that I was weird with moved away. It was totally Odd Girl Out. My "best friend" was evil to me in 7th grade and then I didn't have friends again until sophomore year of high school. Yeah, it was greeaaaat.

I went to six different schools in three different states and four different counties between kindergarten and 6th grade. I had a decent group of friends 10-12, but by 8th it all fell apart and I turned into a cross between a recluse and a butterfly. Never really socialized much, but got along with people when I did. But the whole not-part-of-the-group-since-kindergarten/first thing... definitely affected my friendships surrounding instability/inconsistency.

Saw your note about "army brat" in comments after answering. It was only the case for K-4, really, but I was still a latecomer until midway through jr. high.

Then I graduated early and ran like hell to college.

By "army brat" I mean "programmer brat" since we did relocate several times for my dad's work.

My family was reasonably stable, and stayed in one spot in suburbia. I had one good friend by age 4, got another by 8, got a 3rd two years later, got a 4th a year after that -- then lost track of him. Then the 2nd and 3rd advanced beyond me in experimenting in their lives with things that were too strange for me. Drugs, and unsettling social fads like gothiness. So I let them disappear from my life for a few years until I was more socially ready to tolerate the strangeness. Got back in touch with #3, and he introduced me to 2 more -- who have remained good friends since.
