• So apparently I can't work on holidays. "Woo-hoo?"

• Reg and I watched Akira and Key Largo yesterday. I much preferred the latter. Can any of you anime geekoids explain to me wtf Akira was about? This is the second time I've seen it, and I didn't understand it either time.

• I look like I'm hiding gumballs in my cheek pouches instead of golf balls, but I'm still going to wear a kerchief for photos later.

Akira: experiments done on children turn them into wacky genius kids with supernatural-style mental powers (and/or activate their mental powers). Akira was the most gifted of the kids, and something of a legend.

Another psychic child, Tetsuo, is taken by the government during a gang fight and put into the program. His powers awaken and he starts getting beyond control; he breaks out of the institution at the same time his friend Kaneda is breaking in with a revolutionary group. Tetsuo is about half sane and is looking for Akira, probably hoping that Akira can help him with his new powers. He goes to the stadium where Akira theoretically is, wrecking everything on the way. He and Kaneda fight as Kaneda is trying to prevent him from wrecking the city, etc. Also Kaneda is just sort of a jerk, IMO.

In the end Tetsuo reaches the stadium, but finds that Akira is dead and in a lot of little tubes. (I believe that in the manga Akira is killed by the government because his power is perceived as a threat). Tetsuo begins to lose control of his powers entirely, turning into a monster and indiscriminately destroying things/people. The other psychic kids call Akira back from the dead to help control Tetsuo and take him to some other plane of existence or something.

There's also a lot of corrupt politicians and priests and army types doing various shady things.

ok, i got all of that except the first paragraph. Also I didn't realize that Tetsuo was psychic; i thought that the kid touching him awakened the power.

The stuff I've read about it indicates that in theory he had latent powers, and that's why the gov't wanted him in the program. But it's not terribly clear in the movie, so your interp is as good as mine.

Also the shit with the animated teddy bears in the nursery is the CREEPIEST. THING. EVER. Especially if you've been blazing up. Also this is where the "pebbles and dust and stuff is floating up from the ground around me inexplicably because I'm THROWING OFF MAD CRAZY POWER BABY" thing in every single anime in the history of ever first came from. Yeah it may be played out now, but if you saw Akira when it was new, that was the most badass thing ever.
