I forgot to talk about The Hollow Man so I will now. I've read that Hugo-winning novel that Dan Simmons wrote, and loved it, but I couldn't get through the sequel. So the stand-alone novel was appealing. It's about a telepathic man and his telepathic wife. She gets cancer while he's trying to use chaos theory to divine the secrets of his telepathy, and when she dies, he loses his grip on sanity. The book follows what led up to this as well as his crazy adventures afterwards. Fascinating, interesting, gripping, awesome.

I loved the premise of The Hollow Man, especially the idea that if you knew every aspect of a person, inside out, then that awareness would develop a consciousness in your mind. There is a part about half way through the book where things started getting really weird, though, and while that in and of itself doesn't bother me it was such an unexpected jolt from the rest of the story (even after having read Hyperion) that I lost my focus in the book and never picked it up again.

Yeah, exactly. I've actually talked to a few people who put the book down at that point because it was just so out of the blue. I should give it a shot again; I like Dan Simmons.

It's been several years since I read that; meant to pick it up again. Didn't know there was a sequel. What's it called, just so I recognize it when I see it (and weigh whether I want to lay out cash for it)?

Oh, that.

Yeah. I read all four of those. Been years. Enjoyed 'em, especially the first one, IIRC. The second pair wasn't nearly as good. Have considered reacquiring or at least rereading.

Have you read Ilium? It looked interesting, but I was definitely waiting for it to come out in the cheap format.
